COPE SPECIAL FUND

Objective:

COPE is dedicated to enhancing and improving the quality of postgraduate residency training for all psychiatry residents across Canada. COPE strongly believes in encouraging resident leadership within novel educational initiatives that are specific to a program’s educational needs and interests. One of the ways COPE hopes to promote postgraduate residency training is through COPE’s Special Educational Fund. This fund is meant to encourage a broad range of educational activities related to postgraduate psychiatry training in Canada. The projects submitted for this fund should be led by residents and can also include program directors and educational leaders.

Description of guidelines and requirements:

  • There will be one $2,500 grant for the best educational proposals/projects each year.
  • Submissions will be reviewed by the COPE scientific subcommittee, and the most noteworthy submission will be selected.

    • innovative educational component (workshops and interactive events will carry more weight)
    • added value to psychiatry residency training
    • capacity to help programs attain the Royal College’s new standards of accreditation (such as educational training in the area of assessing and improving the quality of patient care, involving patient input in training programs, addressing hidden curriculum, etc.) or CBME, etc.
  • The COPE Research subcommittee will review all applications
  • The winning applicant(s) will be notified as soon as possible after which those applicants can move ahead in planning their local events.
  • The winning educational event(s) must first be paid by their home program. COPE will reimburse the winning applicants/institution following the submission of the following information:
    • The number of residents that attended the event
    • In general, the feedback received about the event
    • Recommendations as to what might be done differently to improve the event, should it be repeated in future.
